French Communists to Monitor US Election

Filed under: General — by Jane Novak at 7:01 am on Friday, October 15, 2004

WEll, this is annoying:

The European body charged with ensuring fair and transparent elections in member countries has selected 60 monitors from 25 countries to observe the U.S. elections next month, concentrating on closely contested states.
The observers represent a broad range of political philosophies, from the far left to the far right. The group includes communists from France and Russia, a Turkish women’s rights advocate and a counterterrorism expert from Belgium. …
The State Department reluctantly extended an invitation to the OSCE this summer, after a dozen Democratic members of Congress requested observers from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Washington Times is spinning this one a bit, just to keep the pot boiling. There’s no cause-and-effect with the Democrats in Congress. The OSCE election observer program has been in effect for something like 35 years.

The US also invites international observers for the purpose of learning how the US runs its 50+ different electoral processes. These observers both learn and report. They can, of course, offer their personal, judgmental opinions, but they have zero force of law or influence in the US.

I’m still going to spill coffee on any international observer at my polling place.

I’m sure we are going to hear their personal judgemental opinions this time.

I’d like to be sure that they wouldn’t, but I can only summon up a “I don’t think they will”. If US media tracks them down individually, however, all bets are off.

Does this mean that, this time, the candidate that gets the most votes wins the election, and gets to be the Prez, as happens in European democracies?

Or isn’t that a good idea?

To joe 90
It depends on which form of European democracies that you refer to. Do you mean European countries whose governments are made up of 10 to 20 ruling coalition political parties that make it impossible to govern by mandate of the people? Did Chirac win France’s presidency by majority vote stritcly due to his party affiliation? Or did he have to broker deals with Frances socialists, communist, and other political parties to win popular support? I believe this is a prime example of Kerry’s coalition of the coerced and bribed theory. I’ve traveled Europe and I’ll take my chances casting my ballot here in the mother country!

Wow joe,
You are a real walking talking puppet for the left aren’t you? Maybe you should do some research on the electoral college before you make asshat comments like that. It only proves your ignorance of the subject.
