its a lie as usual.yes the maldives is in recession.the tsunami has hit hard deep into the economy.tourists are visiting less. and gayoom wants 300 million dollars urgently..but the Maldives is a police state.and gayoom the longest dictator in asia..

The Maldives are very low coral atolls and were hit pretty hard by the tidal wave. The higest elevation is probably only about 12-to-16-feet above sea-level, and one entire island was submerged. They say the disaster-bill is 4.8 Billion.
This is probably an effort to make-nice in the face of a poorly run economy and human-rights abuses, and secure more reconstruction money from the UN.
