UAE Call for Elections

Filed under: General — by Jane Novak at 8:50 pm on Wednesday, February 23, 2005

The dominos just keep falling.

AN: Reformists are calling for an elected Parliament in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in an unprecedented public demand for a greater say in the government.

Although there is no political dissent or extremist violence in the UAE, it is now the only state without elected bodies in the Gulf region after Saudi Arabia held municipal elections earlier this month.

What you guys don’t acknowledge is that, in many cases, democracy won’t necessarily bring freedom or liberty to the peoples of the Middle East. Of course we would all like to see that, but in some cases people vote in their own repression: remember that Hitler was voted in using completely democratic methods. (He then, of course, distorted the law – using fully legal methods – to consolidate his power and destroy democracy.)

Promoting instability is not always a good thing. Are you prepared to reap a whirlwind? I doubt it.
