What is encouraging is that despite the usual blames of rigging and misuse of power, All three (1991, 1996 & 2001) elections have put analternate party to power so as to balance the equilibrium to some extent.

I hope that in the future election (2006) the people of Bangladesh will also exercise their voting power in selecting right candidates (irrespective of the party)who will bring about some change in the obstructionism.

I believe that a functioning democracy ensures more accountibilty of the lawmakers and better development prospect for a country. Bangladesh is yet achieve:
* separation of judiciary from govt. administration
* Neutralize the role and behaviour of govt. media (not to use them as propaganda machine)
* A proper functioning parliament where the accountability of the lawmakers would be discussed where difference opinions are considered and respected.
* Make govt. administration free from political influence.

The international community can contribute in believing in the general people (not the govt. administration); cutting the sources of Middle east funding for extremist activities; encourage more export options (there are more jobs needed for many people to feed) and develop measures to protect people and infrastructures from natural disasters in this disaster prone area. If a this more populous nation remains in good governance, these people will remain out of poverty causing less problem to the neighboring countries (migration issues) and there will be less politics in aids giving by the more affluent nations.

People get pushed far enough they're apt to do most anything. Let's hope the PTBs have the good sense to give way quietly.

The times are a changin'. Maybe far enough to allow liberal* democracy to sweep the world.

*In the old sense of 'liberal'

I think some poltical reforms are in order but its way far from any shooting as the parties are much more didived than the people. Bangladesh is a rather stable country but there's aome room for improvement in terms of corruption ect (as with most states including the US.)

Hmmm, Looks like reform movements are on their way. Along with the subsequent investigations and criminal prosecutions. I hope it doesn't take a shooting war to affect change. But if a shooting war is needed, let's hope the Bangladeshi people can carry it through.
