Chemical Weapons Yemen

Filed under: General, Yemen — by Jane Novak at 4:44 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2005

So of course the thing that I want to know about this weaponized gas the Yemeni military used in Saada, is what is it and where did they get it. Did they make it or buy it? Its been refered to several times in the Yemeni media as chlorine gas, but I dont know who determined thats what it was or why. Also I heard there was another one that burned the skin, maybe some type of blister agent. I have no clue.

CNS A US congressional task force report alleges that in mid-1991, chemical weapons and “about 400″ Scud missiles were transferred from Iraq to Yemen and Sudan. The report states that due to pressure from Saudi Arabia on Yemen, all of the missiles were sent “soon afterwards” from Yemen to Sudan. The report was said to be based on unidentified European and Israeli intelligence sources… A White House official said on 2/16/98 that the United States has “no credible evidence” to support the allegations. European intelligence sources likewise said they had no evidence to support the charges.

Just for future reference, and no I dont think I found Saddams WMD. (But Saleh and Saddam were always very buddy buddy. Saleh is the one Arab leader who stood with Saddam during Gulf 1. )

Maybe its from North Korea, in June a North Korean official visited Yemen to finalize some trade arrangements. The US intercepted some skuds in 2002 going from North Korea to Yemen, but it was legal so we let it go.

BTW Yemen ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2000.

Now seriously, the Yemeni military used the gas. Some top Yemeni military people are linked to al-Qaeda. Isn’t the big threat supposed to be al-Qaeda getting chemical weapons? So what about this nexus of al-Qaeda and chemical weapons in Yemen?

Update: two posts up Steven Den Beste describes chlorine’s appearence and effect, which matches pretty well with my witness and al-Houthi’s description in his email.

a fellow brooklynite, gee. ok lets then review what the article said:

1) a religious scholor who we know is respected and part of the official religous establishment condemned the use of gas as a weapon in a letter to saleh.

2) one of the al-houthis said in an interview they were using gas, and this has been in several papers in yemen. there were other published references to gas use and effects.

3) one example was a kid was listed as injured by the gas in an article that named kids in jail.

4) i had an interview with a fighter who described the color and effects
and not in the article, dates and places

5) yahya al houthi gave the same places and effects and his email to me is more detailed than the exerpt in the article

6) not in the article, but technically the effects and colors of chlorine gas would be the same as in the interview with this guy and al-houthi

7) the area is tightly sealed for over a year.

then i said, theres these allegations for a while, lets put them to rest by opening the area.

so its a topic for debate now at least when before it wasnt even a topic in english. and having ratified the chemical weapons convention, if chlorine gas was used as a weapon, then saleh has violated the convention. just as a general question, do you really doubt ali mohsen is capable of gassing the houthis and everyone around them? what makes you so sure that it didnt happen? theres enough here to at least have some reasonable concern.

and no, bombing is absolutely not my goal. my goal is only to bring some attention to the real situation of the yemeni people who get none, you know if you are in the us.

FYI iam zaidi too and let me tell the camp againts us was most likely lead by ali mohsen he had major old beef with the houthi .. all your points are solid arguments i cant say im 100% sure that they didnt use it .. whats werid is if i didnt know u were talking about saleh i would assume your talking about sadam .. they were buddies and partners in crime if you want to say so and seeing sadam washing his clothes on tv and getting on delayed live tv is a harsh reality to the arabs and a warning to all leaders.. but comparing saleh to sadam “activity wise” is just insane .. jane you have stirred the political stream in Yemen you ticked them off and twisted their elbows but please realize that such accusations will not just affect saleh but all his people .. lets wait and see whats going to happen in his upcoming visit couple of my peeps want to go down and demonstrate and thats cool … one mroe thing, please answer this .. ONE WORD only no talk .. now that saddam is gone is Iraq safer ? Yes or No .. if saleh is gone would yemen be safer .. think about it .. its my infamous shoe theory .. an old shoe is comfortable and fitting .. a new shoe is shinny and good looking but very uncomfortable .. sorry i talked alot it is sad where Yemen is going through .. and its sadder where yemen will end .. and we have two parties one wana maintain their status “status quo” and the other whats to be transformative and they are going to pull us apart..

First of all you should note that I am the first and only person in the world trying to portray the yemeni people in a good light. we know the us people never thought about yemen until 9/11 and then after that only thought of yemen as the home of bin laden. saleh never tries to put yemeni people in a friendly way, he and his spokesmen always give the impression they are all terrorist and the west needs saleh to protect them from the yemeni people.

i say something different in every article. i say the yemeni people are the reformers, the democrats, and the victims of saleh who is the really scary one. look back at every one, i am saying everytime the people are brave, couragous, and wanting their freedom.

the old shoe huh? what about the kids? i could start spitting statistics but you know the poverty, the corruption, the lack of hope. the old shoe is strangling the people. the whole country is slowly dying. freedom is not free, thats a us saying im sure you are familiar with.

you dont seriously think the us is going to stop kissing saleh butt because of me. im watching for a long time. they never said anything for four years about yemen except for praise. last week krajeski said democracy is slowing. the next day he said, my remarks were misinterpreted. and he was talking only about the journalists. what does that mean. not much.

saleh is a mini saddam, some people emphasis mini, some emphasis saddam. but really he is a thief, a thief of hope, a thief of opportunity, a thief of liberty. theres so many people who say it could be worse or look at the other countries. im sorry, maybe its not my place to say it, but i say it could be better. and hes never going to open the way to make it better. if he wanted to bring democracy to the people, it would have happened by now.

im waiting for the trip, you betcha. im big hope is really he is stepping down. and then its no magic wand. theres work from selfless people for decades, theres reconciliation, theres education to take effect, theres sewage systems to build, and hospitals to make functional. but another seven years….i cant see it, yes it may be quiet, stable, and not challenging but where will the people be then, ready for ahmed? please. im sorry but i cant keep my mouth shut, and no one is challenging me on the facts (except you) instead they call me a zionist, an abu ghraib person. i dont care about that. but it shows im not all the way wrong about what they are doing: stealing everything for themselves, and theres nothing for the people. its not right whats going on in yemen. if im understand the details correctly or not, i can say that: its not right. and the new shoe does hurt, you are right. but democracy is not easy, it involves obligations as much as rights. And the obligations are on the people as much as the politicians.

I am not trying to provoke violence toward the Yemeni people, I am trying to stop the violence that is going on now and will only get worse: the violence of poverty, the violence of corruption, the violence of illiteracy, the violence of desperation. And I really dont care if anybody understand me or not. I am highlighting the truth when no one else is. If they cannot take the truth, then something is wrong.

You will be more than welcomed to visit my village in Ibb it will remind you of uptown ny .. jane you think saleh will really step down lol .. this adminstration wont get rid of him any time soon .. he is a good partner in the war of bla bla bla .. ahmed wont last in power for few hours .. just like the royalists in 60s when prince or imam ahmad died his son lasted for one week and was gone… this is my prediction saleh will stay in power till his time comes up it will i mean it better ever one gotA voosh every once n while .. then they will vote for ahmad or something but i think he will have a bloody end .. talk about some serious family jealousy.. anyhow this my scenario .. put please every once n a while put up some friendly statements you make sometimes think twice about visiting Yemen .. it’s changing slowly but changing kinda reminds me of the good ole south.. promote Yemen you do promote Yemenis not + all the time .. bash the big boys ..
