Democratic Reform in Yemen

Filed under: General, Yemen — by Jane Novak at 11:36 am on Friday, November 11, 2005

Ok better. So we know they discussed the “freedom agenda.”

President Saleh promised American President George W. Bush yesterday more democratic reforms for Yemen, said Al-Haya pan-Arab daily.

Yemeni Foreign Minister, Dr. Abubakr Al-Qirbi told Al-Haya that during discussions with US State Department Condoleezza Rice, the President called upon the US to support Yemen in its reforms particularly in the political and economic sectors.

Meanwhile, a source at the US State Department said that Saleh “pledged to take tangible measures” in the democratization process in the country, but did not give further details.

Tangible measures? Stop threatening journalists? How about opening up the broadcast media? Not targeting the opposition?

Is it true that Hamza Saleh Muqbel (a one member of Ali Abdullah Saleh’s delegation to the US) has asked for political assylum during his president’s visit? I have only heard this news from one source. If true, how embarrassing this is going to be for the Yemeni regime?

I heard this also but haven’t seen any published reports. But if true, its not surprising. Yemen is a prison for the normal people, the entire society.

Have you not heard of the lastest victim of the gangs of the regime. They stabbed and beat Nabil Subaea. Nabil is on the most outspoken critics of the mafia ruling the country for 28 years under the patronage of the US administrations. The US is responsible for not coming public against the corruption of the regime, as they do with other countries around the world. The US never came public against the continuous harrassment of the regime against journalists, opposition members and all critics. The US never showed public and serioud interest for freedoms in Yemen. That is why Saleh and his family and accomplices run the country freely, knowing US will not raise voices to suport any peaceful regime change, vital for Yemenis’ prosperity.
Saleh last theory, praised by the West is that corruption is caused by poverty!!!!!
God bless you.

In various third world countries and as part of the cold war, successive US administrations have supported the Juntas. It is unfortunate to see such models of state un-rulingness still exist in Yemen. The back door of oil production, Yemen is geographically situated in a boiling and sensitive part of the world.
Rule of Juntas breeds corrupted judicial systems. If the system fails in courts of law then everything fails. Everything. I wish a regime change with judicial system manned by judges, lawyers and personnel from outside the Yemeni society. No hope for Yemen to rise with highly corrupted judicial society- Judges and lawyers. It is time for the house of Yemen to get rid of the cockroaches.
