The Aden Abyan Army’s Deal

Filed under: Al-Qaeda, General, Yemen — by Jane Novak at 11:34 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2005
YT/NY Islamist Ahmed Haidrah Abubakr, also known as Abulashaath, said that the latest wave of arrests of Mujahideen in various parts of the country were only to satisfy US demands delivered to President Saleh during his latest visit to Washington DC last week, Al-Ashaath told Al-Wasat newspaper.

Abualashaath himself was arrested a few days ago by security forces after his house was besieged, giving him the only option of submitting himself or detaining his father as hostage.

In a phone conversation from his cell in Abyan, Abulashaath said that the government had failed to deliver many of its promises given to Aden Abyan Army members based on a dialogue arranged by prominent Islamic scholar Hamud Al-Hitar. He said the authorities refused to ‘remedy’ the situation of Mujahideen, and instead arrested them without any clear justifications or accusations.

Asked about whether the Aden Abyan Army would reorganize itself to return to its militant nature, Abulashaath said that “Mujahideen are a problem whether they are in or out of the Army”, denying reports that authorities provided new and specific demands to free the detained Mujahideen. He said “we know that we were imprisoned again only to be used against those opposing the regime.”

This development comes after 16 members of the former Aden Abyan Army were arrested a few months ago. So far none of the detainees is formally accused or tried.

The same story at the YO.

My thoughts is that after the Limburg incident and the capture of the remnants of the AAA, Al-Hitar was brought in to rehab the prisoners and recant their Islamist ways, more or less, no more attacks in Yemen, its embarrassing. They were allowed to return to their families and farms as exchange for this recantment. After Pres. Saleh visit and probable, do more or more more money ” Saleh had to show some effort to combat terrorists for help getting into the WTO and aid. The problem with translating from Arabic to English, much gets lost in the translation. Maybe ” Concerned Citizen ” has a take on this.

Again, you don’t know anything about Yemen. The Aden-Abyan Army is a long story, and it used to be an militant organization in former South Yemen. President Saleh canceled their existence after the unity, and of course, he can’t jail their thousands of members; however, most cooperated with the government and left their militant days behind. However, every now and then small numbers regroup and try to create a fuss, but are quickly dealt with.

This article is just the opinion of one of those jailed for such a commotion; like he had no plans.

Concerned Citizen – yes I do know about Yemen, I lived there for several years and know the history of the AAA. I also know about the recantments of ” former ” militants that are generally released during Ramadan, some that are now appearing in Iraq.

Why do YOU have a problem with this?

News stories, and other bits are like pieces of a puzzle. Get enough and the picture starts to reveal itself.
