Printing those cartoons may have been a churlish thing to do, but burning an embassy is an act of war. Which group, the cartoonists or the rioters, did more to disgrace Islam?

But I was watching the editor of the newspaper who created the contest and he's a nasty guy. He kept talking about how he didnt want to be subordinated. He didnt actually apologize.

Hi Rezwan! Also its importnat not to generalize on either side becasue I think the bulk of the normal people are in agreeement on many issues and like you said the events are being exploited, and its so hard to see through the media how regular people really feel. Thank goodness for internet.

While condemning the violence committed by the Muslim radicals (I think the situation was exploited politically) I agree with Jane that one should not hurt others feelings. Then the question comes what is civilization? Ignoring all the differences of various cultures?

"Being civilized" means exercizing "right to self-express" with respect to others.

When the respect and trust is absent, the intent is questioned and all kinds of miscommunications happen. The opportunists always chip in these circumstances and exploit the situations.

This is true for both the parties that how can one claim to be more civilized ignoring another and violence cannot be any logical mean to rectify any wrong doing.

Cartoons of Mohammed Were Published As a Stunt Intended to Provoke

The cartoons "ran in a newspaper that is repeatedly described as right-leaning, with ties to neocons. ... Most telling may be the cartoon in which a figure stands in front of a blackboard with Arabic writing, translated in the caption: “Jyllands-Posten’s journalists are a bunch of reactionary provocateurs.” In another, a Western man in a turban — most likely the cartoonist — holds up a crude stick figure drawing, as an orange with the label “P.R. stunt” lands on his head. ... the meaning of both these cartoons is clear — this was a deliberately provocative stunt, and the newspaper knew it." - Tom Tomorrow

I thought the cartoon was not sharp - that is, it was inaccurate. & if I were a Muslim I would be offended. I am always annoyed when commentators cannot be bothered with differentiating between different expressions of Judaism & Christianity.
