Cole Bombers Escape: Why Im Not Surprised

Filed under: Yemen, Yemen-Corruption — by Jane Novak at 10:47 pm on Sunday, February 5, 2006

Personally my first tip off was that the Yemeni regime recieved a (2003 or maybe 2004) UN directive requesting they close 144 AQ and Taliban affliated bank accounts, and in response closed one. One. The next year they didnt issue the alert to the banks at all.

Also it seemed pretty in your face when they lied to the US that one top AQ was killed in a firefight, but later they admitted they let him go without pursuit, per the State Dept 2004 Patterns of Terrorism report.

Then there was Hassani saying that Saleh knew in advance of the Cole bombings. A few more escapes. The murderer of Jaralleh Omar getting preferential treatment in jail. The Leader of the Aden Abyan Army saying that they just keep us to fight their enemies, and then the report of “irregular bands of Salifists” fighting alongside the army in Saddah.

The Iraqis who said the nephew of Saddam was operating out of Yemen and financing and directing the insurgency in Northern Iraq. I dont think he’s been picked up yet. And all the travel passes and lots o’ Iraqi Baathists in the Yemeni military. Reports of training camps run by the Yemeni military and security forces, the subverted ones, to train insurgents for Iraq. The Saudis complaining that weapons used by AQ in the attack on the US~ compound were registered to the Yemeni Military. The news report of known safehouses in Sanna run by top military members for insugents on their way to Iraq-they even listed the names in that article. I could just go on and on. I could. But really we need to remember the Yemeni people are the victim of this regime more than anyone else.

Sorry but let review, Yemen total population about 20 million; four million children under the age of five in Yemen: one half stunted by malnutrition by their fifth birthday. Half never enter first grade. 11% die, half of those from diarreah caused by dirty water and cured with a .10 salt packet. Two doctors per every 11,000 Yemenis. 90% nationally dont have clean drinking water but the qat plantations owned by the influential have water. Female mortalitiy high and 85% of women give birth without pre or post natal healthcare and half of womens deaths are related to pregnancy. Unemployement high and the elite not only having political power and being in top military positions, but it turns out are also the largest land owners and business owners. And many top government employees also hold stakes in some of Yemen’s biggest businesses. And the nexus of corruption and terrorism and military power is an important intersection. They smuggle arms in the military planes presumably. Otherwise how could Yemeni tanks show up in the Sudan?

So Im not in the least surprised that the previously escaped Cole mastermind is now in the wind again, for the second time. Actually it was predictable. But the bigger story is the kids.

What is driving me nuts is that there’s a strong pro-democracy movement inside yemen, being repressed along with the journalists, and they know exactly how to fix things, but not how to get from point A to point B.

Then there was Hassani saying that Saleh knew in advance of the Cole bombings.

So you believe this about Cole bombing,
You depend on such resources (Hassani statements).well, Hassani years ago was working in Alhudidah as the head of naval forces, there with all hypocrisy he used to make out that he is so loyal to the military leader in that region and as well to the political leadership of the country, then his job changed to be working as Yemen ambassador in Syria, just as he got informed he is going to be kicked out, he gone for seeking political refuge in UK and start stating such nonsense which apparently come out of personal reasons, otherwise he would talked about that so earlier, not just because he was kicked out ,so I am asking, can we call this man ,man of principles who worth we listen to him, however immediately on hearing him you took it as if he is one of the messengers of god whom never lie. I don’t see this has any thing to do with the way journalists work, which again poses question if you are really independent journalist.

The Leader of the Aden Abyan Army saying that they just keep us to fight their enemies,
Good for you Jane, this is very important point, since you gone back to the roots of violence and terror, which rarely you do.

Regardless whether the regime use them or not. But let us recall who first used innocent Muslim and young men to fight against their enemies. It was America.
You Americans who taught this guys (whom were willing to sacrifice for principles) to use the religion in politics in such violent way against Soviet Union. you who first created terror and then you kept watering such plants by your policies in mideast .notwithstanding I am sure the regime does not go for such tactics but even presumably if it is true, this would mean we are just following your way in politics. By the way, America during the cold war used to insist on officials in north of Yemen to use the salfists, and other Muslim groups against the communists in south of Yemen. Therefore it would be better if you as American devote your time and effort for the continues wrong policies of your country.

And then the report of “irregular bands of Salifists” fighting alongside the army in Saddah.

This is not true, but even if true, so what, the army was fighting other army in saddah (not people) how suppose that it happens country of democracy has two armies, one for the country and the other for group who claim godly rights in ruling. Alongside the army of Alhuthi there were extremists men fighting against the government, similarly extremists who believe not in alhuthi approach of Islam wanted to fight against them, however none fought there .also it is well known that in Yemen, not just we have army but the people can integrate with the army under the nationalism concept, this is very healthy phenomenon. Moreover, you are talking about salafists, well we disagree with them and as Yemenis we try to stop them or at least to have them more tolerant and understanding ones. If you believe salfists misrepresent religion, you have to work against them, not in Yemen because we know best to how to deal with it, but try to halt this radical approach in your country which is represented in your religious president, not just religious, Bush is an other salfist and hard jihadist.
Seymour Hersh in his last article said:
Bush’s closest advisers have long been aware of the religious nature of his policy commitments. In recent interviews, one former senior official, who served in Bush’s first term, spoke extensively about the connection between the President’s religious faith and his view of the war in Iraq. After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the former official said, he was told that Bush felt that “God put me here” to deal with the war on terror. The President’s belief was fortified by the Republican sweep in the 2002 congressional elections; Bush saw the victory as a purposeful message from God that “he’s the man,” the former official said. Publicly, Bush depicted his reëlection as a referendum on the war; privately, he spoke of it as another manifestation of divine purpose.
So Jane, I think our responsibility is easier that yours .we deal with simple people believe in salfism, but what calamity is it, Jihadist rules America. U would forget about Yemen and turn into your country problems if really you are just independent journalist.

The Saudis complaining that weapons used by AQ in the attack on the US~ compound were registered to the Yemeni Military
Jane, do you really have control over your borders with Mexico?
I heard, not just traditional weapons will be got through to America through Mexico borders ,but pieces of nuclear would be gotten through the border which in turn would get reassembled in America to be used in terrorist attacks. Moreover Saudi appreciated Yemen’s help in this regard, since the regime planed to buy all the weapons in the market which caused the prices of weapons to go higher 250%.

But it turns out are also the largest land owners and business owners. And many top government employees also hold stakes in some of Yemen’s biggest businesses.

The largest land owners and business owners are people like ,Sahir Abdu Alhaq ,Ha’il Sa’id Anna’am, and his sons, Alqalimi , Akhwan thabit, Abduall hussen alhmar’s sons .. Etc
They are from Taiz, Taiz, Rada’a, Aden, and Khwalan respectively.
According to what info you are painting such picture about Yemen, but what about Bush family with oil companies particularly in Arab country, America is the biggest example for intersection of wealth and money, decision makings, and think tanks through what is known as the turning door.

So Jane, you have bigger deals in your country than that in Yemen. Let every one of us be attention about what goes wrong in his/her own country since the national countries still constitute the backbone for the world order nowtime.

Jane, finally I am asking you .what more you want from Yemen pertains the war on terror, 23 escaped, does this really mean, the country do its best not to uproot terror?
Well, do u expect Yemenis to be doing better than America in the war on terror?
Well ,trillions of dollar America spent since 11 sep ,thousands of America soldiers dead since, 150,000 innocent of Iraqis killed, etc ,,BUT still ,Osama Bin Laden is still operating freely and he keeps sending you messages that really scare Americans ,you had taken not in consideration your allay (Pakistani) and killed 20 ones but still Aymen Althwahri could escape ,,once happened mullah Omar was in sight but due to bureaucratic complexity he was not targeted .you brought the world up and down after the 11 sep ,but still Osama done 11 march in Spain ,and done that of Uk ,and recently Jordan. How come you are talking such as if your country is symbol of perfection, how happens you are playing a role that is only one of the almighty characteristics (question but not be questioned) there are many questions which you can ask your officials about IF you are sincerely looking for the best of humanity and independent journalist.

Hello Yassen, every day that there are thousands of articles written about the US but few about Yemen. Also Im not comparing the US to Yemen by raising these issues. I afgree it’s important to look to how things developed to understand them and to think about the future. Its telling the only part you dont comment on is the 4 million kids. Is their future getting brighter by the day or darker?

Yassen,

Two points you forgot to mention:

1. This website allows for YEMENIS to also speak their minds as well. Not only ‘American Jane’.

2. Saleh, his brothers, and his son operate the focal points of the Yemeni government. They own and have ‘acquired’ lands, mansions, and palaces. They directly or indirectly own many businesses.

If you recall thirty years ago, Saleh and Alahmar family did not own anything worth mentioning.

Yet today, most of the wealth of Yemen is concentrated in their hands.

The question isn’t why Jane cares about Yemen. It’s about YOU and I as Yemenis.
Do we really care?

If we do, then any constructive criticism should be considered on the merits of its benefit to Yemen.
