Suicide at Gitmo
One of three suicides at Gitmo has been identified as Ali Abdullah Ahmed, previously listed as number 395 on the list of detainees the Pentagon released in April: 395. AHMED, ALI ABDULLAH – Yemen.
Fox News: While U.S. officials argue the suicides were political acts aimed at hurting American standing in the world, human rights activists and former detainees say prisoners are desperate after years in captivity and view suicide as the only way out even though Islam forbids it.
A European official urged that the widely criticized prison be closed, and two senior U.S. senators expressed concern that most of the prisoners have not been charged with any crimes. A Saudi Arabian human rights group called for an outside investigation of the deaths.
Update: One of the men, Ali Abdullah Ahmed of Yemen, 29 or 30, was described by the military on Sunday night as a ”close associate” of Abu Zubaydah, an Osama bin Laden deputy now in U.S. custody at a secret location.
