Who is Faisel Bin Shamlan?

Filed under: Yemen — by Jane Novak at 11:09 am on Friday, June 23, 2006

He is reportedly to be the candidate of the JMP. What is his relationship to the JMP? Is he in a party? Or is he one candidate that they all respect? What’s the story, anybody know?

Hi Jane,

Bin Shamlan is from Hadramaut. I do not think he belongs to any party, most probably he is independent. The only thing I remember about him is that after the 1994 civil war he was appointed as the minister of Oil & Mineral Resources, and when he found that there is corruption in that Ministry and the rule of the minister is similar to a rule of a BIG CLERK and that he does not know any thing about the revenue of that sector and that another people are managing the revenue of Oil & Gas in a mysterious way, he resigned. That attitude gave him a credibility in the public opinion. He then left to Saudi Arabia and nobody heard any thing about him. I hope I am right in my brief, and wish him all the best.

He is a real gentleman, clean handed and upright. As a young man he joined the poular front for the liberation of occupied south yemen (NLF, the predecessor and main founding organization of the Yemeni Socialist Party. He became the chairman of the electricity corporation after independence. After the 1990 unity he founded a new moderate islamist party called the Yemeni Free Gathering .. but later became independent . He was a member of the first ROY parliament and after the 1994 war he was appointed minister of oil . he later resigned in protest of corrupt practices .. he belogs to the same trend represented by Dr. Farag bin Ghanem the minster of the ex PDRY and who became a prime minister of ROY sometime after 94 but also resigned in protest of corruption and chaos in government. Mr Bin Shamlan is widely respected by the Yemeni elite although he keeps a low profile. this is mostly from memeory but i will be writing an article about him for wikipedia

Well thats very good news, that he’s honest and lived by his principles. Also if he held these top positions, he must be a technocrat to some degree. Thats quite encouraging. Thanks very much to you both. It’s very nice and helpful to have someone to ask. I tried to goggle him and didnt get any good results.

bin shamlan lost his credibility twice, once in the eyes of patriotic southern masses ,and more recently he lost his credibility within the leadership of social party

In the eighth of January 2002 general: Ali Algufish headed the fourth session of organization so called (southern and eastern territories organization) most probably the “eastern” was interpolated there. The session decided to create a committee destined for leading and controlling efforts to get “‘ the rights of people in the south and the “”east”‘ back” . bin shamlan and sheikh Saleh Bin Farid Alaolgi headed that committee.

Then for climax of reasons people in the south protested and spoke out that this committee seeks to break Yemen unity, after more investigations, the accusations were proved to be true ,and then the committee was dissolved as well as the organization.

That time, when bin shamlan lost his credibility and his public image.

Recently bin sahmlan has arranged secret meetings with the muslim brotherhood movement to support his position or to use them for shining up his public image.
this was the time when he lost his credibility within the social party leadership members, that s why Yassin Noman still reluctant to nominate him

his full name is Faisal Othman Bin shamlan i have got some interviews by him in Arabic explaining why has he resigned

heykal, we will see on election day who has lost credibility and who has not .. for a moment i thought you are the famous M.H.Heykal, haha i was trying to get in touch with him to elaborate on what you branded as “conspiracy theory” yesterday, on the question of trying to get round the problem of heridatory sucession as the main motive for this clever move by saleh and all the crisis it has cause .. the second reason of course is than in a real competative election saleh will certainly lose and he knows that.

Bin Shamlan speaks three languages, English, French and Arabic, he was the commercial director of Aden refinery for sometime prior to unification, and i think he’s got a very good chance to win as i don’t see someone with such a fine standing within the GPC in order to represent a true competition.
In fact the only way the GPC can keep some influence is to nominate Bin Shamlan as well and form some sort of arrangement with the JMP.

Today Bin Shamlan candidacy was confirmed by JMP. At the same time saleh and GPC are applying tremendous pressures on him and JMP parties in an attemot to “persuade” them withdraw him.some new polls are showing saleh not getting more than 33% of the elctorate vote. Dr. Alfaqeeh tof Sana’a university expects Bin Shamlan to win.
