Islah issues Fatwa Against Female Candidates: 26th Sept

Filed under: Yemen — by Jane Novak at 5:28 pm on Friday, August 18, 2006

Women are only qualified as voters, not candidates, they say. Women’s protest march planned. JMP rejects “woman only” face offs in designated electoral districts proposed by GPC. But then again this is from the 26 September, so it may be all propaganda:

26 Sept: Abdu Mohammed Al-Ganadi, the head of Information sector and Electoral Awareness in the SCER said that some parties still consider women as voters only and do not support their candidatures for the local councils elections in spite of promising they have committed earlier to support women’s candidacy and pledged to cooperate with them but unfortunately they breached their promises during applying.

In a statement to “26 September net”, Al-Ganadi reported that the SCER has made initiatives in inviting parties to make an agreement between them to support women in the upcoming elections as the text of an agreement on the principles of cooperation with women.

On the other hand, Al-Ganadi has called some women for solidarity in order to defend their rights and legitimate struggle, especially that Yemeni laws have created the conditions for them to get their rights, and not wait for men to give them their rights.
He emphasized if there is a real solidarity among women , the half members of local councils will be from women.

Furthermore, a number of civil society organizations and women leaders in Yemen have invited to organize tomorrow Sunday a massive march of women, , calling for the joint meeting parties, especially Islah party to review their policy towards women and their participations in political life.

The march will go to the front of Islah headquarters and other joint meeting parties and it comes after a significant number of women compliances of the joint meeting parties in refusing their candidates applications in the local elections. It is noteworthy that the General People’s Congress (GPC) has allocated a number of closed circuits for women and told the joint meeting parties to leave competition among women but the JMP leaders have refused the proposal, well-informed sources stated to “26 September net”.

Women’s massive march is coming after a dialogue between the GPC and the JMP leaders have come to an end towards women participations in the local councils, especially the Islah party has a fatwa to ban women candidacy and considered them confined only to political life as a voter.

women can definitely be a key player in the yemeni elections considering the large body of female registered voters. the problem, however, is that they lack both the will and the means to be organized, not to mention illiteracy in a patriarchal society

past elections show–in many electorial districts–that some MPs and local council members could never win the elections without female votes..
surprisingly enough, islah is the party that benefits more from female voters than other parties..

There is no doubt in my mind that to secure other rights in these countries we must first get women’s rights. These guys are afraid of women, which is why they don’t want them as candidates. They know that women in power will spoil their “ol boy’s club”
