Photo of Yahya Muhammad Abdullah Saleh, the nephew of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and commander of the Central Security Organization, attending special prayers for former Iraqi president and mass murderer Saddam Hussein in Sanaa January 2, 2007.

In addition to his duties as head of the Central Security, Yahya Saleh heads up the committees to collect funds for the Palestinian and Lebanese charities and “resistance;” Yayah also heads the Yemeni Association of Tourism and Travel Agencies while running several business ventures. Quite a good multi-tasker that Yahya.

Sanaa, 2 Jan. (AKI) – A condolence house has been set up in the Yemeni capital Sanaa for former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, who was executed on Saturday. The office, which was opened on Monday, is for both Yemenis and Iraqi residents living in Yemen to mourn the death of the former Iraqi president. According to reports in the Arabic daily, al-Quds al-Arabi, the office will remain open till Tuesday evening and was set up by an association known as “Kanaan”, led by Yahya Muhammad Abdullah Saleh, nephew of Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh and the head of the local security forces.

Various members of Saddam Hussein’s family, who had taken refuge in Yemen after the fall of his regime in 2003, were present to receive the condolences from the people.

The names of Saddam’s family members at the condolence house were not revealed for security reasons but according to the report in the Arabic daily, they are believed to be the second tier of Saddam’s large family.

Reports say the number of people offering their condolences far exceeded the number expected. The former Iraqi leader, 69, was hanged early on Saturday morning after being sentenced to death over the killings of 148 Shiites from the town of Dujail in 1982.

I wonder if Saddam’s nephew, Omar Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan Al-Tikriti, who is wanted by Interpol showed up.

KUWAIT TIMES: “The spokesman of parliamentary popular bloc, MP Musalem Al-Barrak said that the Kuwaiti people experienced a collective ‘flashback’ to 1990 at the time of Saddam Hussein’s execution. Al-Barrak attacked the president of Yemen Ali Abdullah Saleh for his statement that the execution was an insult to Arab people, saying that he (Al-Barrak) considered execution to be a fitting insult for Arab leaders who oppress their people, showing them that they will face a similar fate to Saddam. He also attacked the Lybian president Mohamer Al-Ghadafi due to the Libyan leader’s opposition to the execution, reported Al-Rai.”

Yemen responds that it will not respond to the Kuwaitis:

Almotamar.net – SANAA- An official source in the Yemeni government on Thursday commented on what some Kuwaiti official and private newspapers published of offences against the Yemeni leadership, government and the people mentioning the government of the republic of Yemen will not be dragged to responses and enter in any king of wrangles under the present circumstances of crises and divisions that threaten the Arab nation’s future.

The Yemeni news agency quoted the source as saying that what we are in need now is the work to heal the rift, overlook differences and keep the Arab rank unity and Arab solidarity for encountering the dangers that are threatening it.

While there is a daily international and popular increasing condemnation to the method and timing of hanging Saddam Hussein some media and a number of hard liner Islamist parliamentarians in Kuwait embarked for some days l on launching an offence campaign on the Yemeni people and their political leadership and government.

also Saddam’s niece in Yemen:

A NIECE of Saddam Hussein urged Arab leaders today to help save her father from the gallows after the “public assassination” of her uncle.

“I plead to Arab leaders … to save the necks of my father and uncles. What happened is enough. It (Saddam’s) was a public assassination and an insult to all Arabs,” Thuraya, a daughter of Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti, said through Al Arabiya television.

“Please, please let them have mercy over my father, my uncles who are left. No one deserves this punishment over a matter that is not worthy,” she said by telephone from Yemen.
