WOW, it is overwhelming. The rally to protest against the inhumane blockage of over 1.5 million people should not be linked to the internal politics in Yemen. I think the whole world ought to do something about the racist regime in Israel, calling for a pure Jewish state!

Frederic, I couldn't agree more. The mafia is reasons the reforms can not be implemented. The fact that the military is beyond Saleh's control is the reason why the mediated truces in Sa'ada have failed three times already.

The last three "terror" attacks 2006-2008 all have some highly dubious aspects, each in its own way. Yet all served to strenthen Saleh's credentials of victimhood to the Western observers who took them at face value.

Its quite possible Ali Mohsen has his hand in every major criminal enterprise from counterfeiting to drug smuggling to gun running. The vast criminalization of Yemen is organized to the highest levels. Mafia is exactly the right word. Its a mafia with a banking system, an army and its own airline.

The involvement of the military is common place in most of the Arab countries, therefore, the visible pattern of power in Yemen is not to surprise anyone. More concerning should be the lack of influence President Saleh appears to enjoy over many high rank commanders, themselves linked to influential people who shape the whole yemeni economy around their own interests. Can we imagine that a hidden lobby is now hidding behind many criminal activities such as the smuggling of refugees between Somaliland and Gulf countries, illegal weapons supply to the never ending guerrilla in Saada region and many other traffics (drug, prostitution, human body parts for easy transplant?
What exactly is the influence of Gen M. Ali Mohsen? Who was actually behind the the sabotage of Sanaa main weapons/ ammo warehouse last year, located less than 2000 meters away from the President's palace? More bluntly said, is Abdallah Saleh still in charge? Maybe the King has no more clothes, and the alleged "AQ dormant cells" are only a cover up which is necessary to be granted Westerners support. Some maffia might then be the real puppet master and Yemen the real victim...
