Three blasts were heard late Sunday in a residential complex of Yemen’s capital housing the headquarters of a formerly US-owned oil firm, residents said, but the cause was not immediately clear. The compound — where US oil experts are believed to live, although this could not be immediately confirmed — houses the offices of Safer oil company, the former Hunt Oil firm which is now owned by Yemen. Police cordoned off the area of the explosions in the Al-Hadda neighbourhood of southwestern Sanaa, residents said.
Al-Qaeda targeted the US Embassy in Sana’a in March with three mortars that missed their target, landing in a school yard, killing a school girl and policeman. Also this week, three protesters in Southern Yemen were killed by security forces and twelve died as a result of renewed fighting in the war in the northern Sa’ada province between Zaidi rebels and a pro-government tribal paramilitary.
