Exclusive: Crowd frees Sheik from Jail in Yafe, South Yemen

Filed under: South Yemen — by Jane Novak at 3:35 pm on Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Sheik Musa al-Nakhibi was in police custody in Yafe. Sheik al-Nakhibi had been charged by authorities with protecting Hassan Ba’um from arrest during the Yafe conference.

(Remember the news reports that Baoum was being protected by hundreds of armed men in Yafe, and our report on the conference in Yafe that established the provisonal national government.)

On November 1, Sheik al-Nakhibi was freed by force from the police custody.

The peaceful struggle for equality in south Yemen is escalating but has not broken into all out violence. However the ability of southerners to form a unified governing structure indicates a high degree of cohesion. The forcable freeing of the Sheik indicates the regime’s severe loss of authority in the south.
