Medical Union Vote Do-Over to Install GPC Loyalists
There’s massive corruption in the Heath and Medicine Ministry. A lot of donated and state funded drugs and equipment gets stolen from the ministries shelves. A real doctors union could put some pressure to increase health care standards. But no, what’s been produced is another clone. Similarly, if its impossible to get even a fair union vote, what do we think of the upcoming Parliamentary vote?

The Yemen Observer recently published an article about the results of elections to the Doctors Syndicate of the Capital-Secretariat Branch during a subsidiary meeting on October 16. The purpose of these elections was to choose an administrative authority for the syndicate. Yet oddly enough, another meeting was held October 30 to conduct new elections to choose the administrative authority of the same Yemeni Doctors Syndicate of the Capital-Secretariat branch.Last week in a simple hall used for wedding ceremonies, the first sub-conference of the Yemeni Doctors Syndicate of the Capital-Secretariat branch elected Dr. Mohammed al-Surmi as a Chairman of the syndicate. His election took place in the presence of a large number of Yemeni doctors. Yet, the first sub-conference of the Yemeni Doctors Syndicate of the Capital-Secretariat branch was again held in the Al-Shawqani Hall of the Policemen Faculty to elect a new leader and administrative authority.
So the Yemeni Doctors Syndicate of the Capital-Secretariat branch remains divided as each side has insisted on its legal existence and rejected the other.
According to Dr. Abdul-Karim Shaiban, a doctor taking part in the elections during the last conference, 1050 female and male doctors, the required number to hold elections, participated.
“It is impossible to believe that all people who participated in this conference are doctors. They just gathered a number of medicine students and employees of Public Health and Population offices to reach the required audience,” said Dr. al-Surmi to Mareb Pree website. “To be sure, you can compare the real lists of doctors with people who attended. Then, everything will be disclosed.”
Dr. al-Surmi also said the participation cards were distributed at night, and not all doctors were able to attend. “I was able getting one of papers specified for elections to choose any names and put it in any elections box, but I did not. There was no a strong supervision to be sure of people who attended and participated in elections,” said Miss Taghrid Abdul-Hamid, a journalist in the al-Wasat newspaper and in the Health and Medicine magazine.
The last conference was conducted under the slogan “Unity of syndicate leads to improve health services and achieve our scientific, vocational and functional demands” to elect 4 men and 3 women as the administrative authority of the syndicate.
Many newspapers covered the last conference as it was supported by the government. “What happened in this conference expressed the ruling party’s policy to put others aside. We are used to see such deception and forgery,” said Dr. al-Surmi.
Our election was conducted in a civil hall, but the other was conducted in a military hall, surrounded by barracks of soldiers, said Dr. al-Surmi. “Many luxurious cars were here to emphasize the presence of the government’s authority. But all doctors know who holds the administrative authority of the syndicate and who does not.” Once again, the elections choose the following people as the administrative authority of the Yemeni Doctors Syndicate of the Capital-Secretariat branch:
1 Dr. Yahya Ghanem, Chairman 2 Dr. Abdul-Aziz al-Dhal’i, Secretary-general 3 Dr. Ebtisam Abu Arejal, Dr. Warda al-Qohali, Dr. Alia Shuaeb, Dr. Abdul-Kraim Zaid, Dr. Mohammed al-Muzaiqer.“If those doctors who are elected to administrate the syndicate in last conference will be able to get our rights and improve the present situation of patients and doctors, I will hope them to ever stay as an administrative authority of the syndicate,” said Dr. al-Surmi as a closing statement for the website.
