Shoot out with Al-Qaeda suspects in Abyan leaves four dead

Security sources said that government forces are still surrounding the militants suspected of belonging to al-Qaeda in al-Romaila district.
Yemen has jailed many militants after attacks on local and foreign interests, the last of which was the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Sana’a last September.

Four Yemeni policemen were among seven people killed in clashes between security forces and suspected Al Qaeda militants, a security official said.
Two armed men wanted by the authorities and a civilian were among those killed in the incident which took place on Wednesday in the southern Yemeni town of Joaar, the official said on condition of anonymity.
“Four members of the security forces, two armed men sought by the justice department, and a civilian were killed in clashes on Wednesday morning between police forces and a group of Al Qaeda sympathisers,” he said.
The security forces were chasing Samy Dyan, thought to be one of the fiercest fighters of Al Qaeda in Yemen, and clashed with armed men who were hiding in a house in Joaar, the official said.
The suspects set a police car ablaze and fled to a nearby mountainous region as police reinforcements arrived on the scene, the official added.
