There’s not much difference between a nine year old bride and a slave, however in this case the sale of a grown man was documented in a Yemeni court.

News Yemen
Yemen Observatory for Human Rights disclosed a slavery case formally approved in a Yemeni court. The YOHR said a man in Hajja province brought another man for Yr 500,000 in 2000. It said that a court in Hajja governorate documented the slavery case.

YOHR said it had a copy of the document including names of the seller, the buyer, the judge and two witnesses involved in the case, confirming it evidence of more cases of slavery in the governorate.

It has considered such cases as “immoral violation of human rights and the national constitution and laws,” urging the Yemeni authorities to investigate the incident, and to hold responsible those people involved in such inhumane practices. It said it would announce names and further details in a special report.

SAN’A, Yemen (AP) – Yemen’s justice minister says authorities are investigating whether a judge approved the sale of a slave.
Gazi al-Aghbari says a judicial committee has been formed to investigate a report brought by a local human rights group that a Yemeni judge approved a slavery contract.
The human rights group cited a legal contract for
the sale of a 26-year-old man named «slave Qannaf» last year bearing the signatures of a judge and several other court officials.

Al-Aghbari said Saturday the judge had been summoned for questioning and would be punished if the story was true.
Yemen is the poorest country in the Arab world. Its constitution bans slavery, but there have been reports the practice continues in the remote hinterlands.
