YemenOnline Learned that that the suspects arrested on suspension of of organising two attacks on South Koreans and of plotting another 10 against Western targets, the interior ministry said on Wednesday. “Six members of an Al-Qaeda cell wanted by the security forces have been arrested,” the ministry’s website quoted a senior security official as saying.The cell was suspected of organising two suicide bombings against South Koreans which killed a total of five people, one against a group of tourists visiting the historic eastern city of Shibam and the other against a group of officials who had been dispatched to join the investigation.The cell was also suspected of plotting 10 other attacks against Western targets, including oil installations and foreign tourists, the official said.”The security forces are in the process of hunting down the other members of the cell. Their arrest is only a matter of time,” he said.
Yemeni security forces have thwarted an al-Qaeda plot to carry out 12 terrorist attacks on foreign interest, oil facilities and tourist sites in the country.
Interior Ministry’ news website and other official news sources reported Wednesday that security services have arrested six people on suspicion of organizing the attacks. It said other suspects are about to be arrested.
“Six al-Qaeda suspects wanted by the security forces have been arrested,” a security official was quoted as saying.
The source said that the two attacks on South Koreans, in Shibam and Sana’a, are included in the al-Qaeda’s plot.
The security source added that information security services have got through investigations with suspects in custody have been helpful to make this success.
The official did not say where or when the six suspects were arrested or what exactly the targets.In the aftermath of two terrorist attacks on S. Koreans in one week, the Interior Ministry announced a security campaign in cities and beyond tribal areas to hunt down suspected members of al-Qaeda. It has also offered a reward for any helpful information may lead to 12 al-Qaeda suspects.
Some MPs have accused security personnel of helping al-Qaeda or adopting leniency to militants and called for a closed session with the government on terrorism and insecurity in the country for the first time.
The two attacks on S. Koreans were a sign of new tactic by al-Qaeda in Yemen as it used teens in horrible suicide bombings.
