I have plans on integrating this 22 page list with my 15 page timeline of attacks. This list contains excerpts from news articles that list the names of al Qaeda captured or convicted, along with the original link, (not hotlinked). Handy yes? Its a safe assumption that the majority of these have been released again.

Feb 18, 2002 Twelve persons are still in custody in the governorate of Ibb, including the brother-in-law of Usama bin Laden, Dr. Mohammed Ghaleb. He is married to the sister of bin Laden’s Yemeni wife. The sources said other two Egyptians are detained in Ibb. They are Ahmed Ezat and Mohammed Omar. May 20, 2002 The man who threw grenades at the US Embassy in March has been convicted by a Sana’a court to 10 years in jail. Sameer Yahia Awadh, 26, exploded the grenades on March 15. http://www.yementimes.com/02/iss21/front.htm XXX

Feb 2, 2003 Yemeni authorities arrested last week two people from al-Eman university affiliated to Sheikh Abdulmajeed Al-Zindani of the Islah Party. Reliable sources said that the intelligence arrested Wednesday a student at al-Eman university named Abduljabar al-Marwani. He was taken from his house at Sa’wan district North East of Sanaa. Two days earlier, the authorities arrested Dr. Ahmad al-Daghshi, a professor at Sana’a and al-Eman universities. Feb 3, 2003 A breakthrough has been made in the military siege to Waset City Hospital in Marib where Mohammed Ali Ali Azaidi received treatment. Azaidi has been suspected of having links to al-Qaeda organization. The son of the Naji Ali Azaidi, a staff general and a brother of Azaidi along with his little brother have been taken as hostages in return for allowing Mohammed Azaidi to receive treatment abroad and then hand himself over to the authorities… Azaidi came back from Afghanistan five years ago. March 3, 2003 Yemeni sources disclosed Wednesday that Abdulkareem Batheeb, al-Qaeda suspect, is the mastermind of the terrorist attack on the French tanker Limburg last October. June 2, 2003 Confrontations took place between an al-Qaeda suspect and the police forces last Wednesday in one of the traditional markets of the Marib City located about 16 km east of Sana’a. June 25 2003 Military units have been reinforced with tanks, helicopters, and led by military experts in mountainous Huttab area, 120 km north east of Aden governorate to track down and arrest or kill members of Islamic Jihad group, formerly known as the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army. September 9, 2003 Yemeni security forces arrested the Saudi citizen Bandar Abdulhakeem al-Ghamidi, a government official source said Tuesday night. Al-Ghamidi is one of the prime 19 suspects of the al-Riyadh terrorist bombings. Oct.26 2003 Yemeni authorities released last Friday a Kuwaiti cleric who was suspected for having links to al-Qaeda. Oct 30 2003 Lebanon charged a Yemeni national on Thursday with carrying out “terrorist acts” and masterminding a string of bomb attacks against American fast food outlets, judicial sources said. Moammar Awwama, suspected of ties to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network, would be tried by a military court on charges that also include membership of “terrorist cells”, attempted murder and attempts to blow up U.S.-style restaurants. March 08, 2004 Yemeni security forces arrested two senior Al-Qaeda members last Wednesday during a hunt for Islamic militants in a mountainous area of the Abyan province, security officials said. March 18 2004 Yemen has arrested a suspected militant wanted over the 2000 bomb attack that killed 17 sailors aboard the USS Cole in the port of Aden, an official Web site said on Tuesday. April 4, 2004 The Yemeni Political Security Organization (PSO) arrested on Monday in Ibb Governorate a Yemeni citizen suspected of being a member of al-Qaeda, a local source said. The source said that the Intelligence Officers arrested Najeeb Saleh al-Muraisi on charges of having links to al-Qaeda after his arrival from Thailand. Al-Muraisi was one of the young militants who fought in Bosnia during mid 1990s. He came back at the beginning of last week from Thailand where he had been teaching the Holy Quran in schools for the last three years. He previously worked in the Philippines for two years. Sept. 6, 2004 Al-Samawi presented two alibi witnesses who confirmed that the second suspect Jamal al-Badwi was not present in Aden before, during and after the USS Cole terrorist attack, and that he was in Sana’a during that time. Oct 5, 2004 The pair, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri and Jamal al-Badawi, were both sentenced to death for orchestrating, plotting, preparing and involvement in the bombing of the US warship. Judge Najib al-Qaderi sentenced Fahd al-Qiss’e to 10 years in jail for filming the bombing. The court said that al-Qiss’e had traveled to Afghanistan in 1997 to train at an al-Qaeda terrorist camp. The fourth convict, Mamoon Amswah, received an eight-year prison term for delivering money used in preparing and executing the attack and playing a close role in assisting al-Badawi. Feb 18, 2005 The Sana’a Counter-Terrorism court started Monday, Feb. 14 the trial of 11 al-Qaeda suspects accused of planning to form an armed gang to carry out “criminal acts” in Yemen and abroad as well as trying to join militants battling U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ten of the 11 defendants were present at the hearing. August 18, 2005 An appeals court in Sanaa found 11 al-Qaeda suspects innocent of charges of attempts to carry out attacks in Yemen and abroad for lack of evidence, judicial sources said. August 2005: A Yemeni court convicted six men of forming an armed gang with links to Al-Qa’ida, planning attacks in Sanaa on the British and Italian embassies and French cultural center, forging passports, and possessing arms and explosives. Iraqi Anwar al-Jilani, 20, was convicted of leading the group and was sentenced to four years imprisonment. Yemeni Abderrahman Basira, 25, Syrian Mohammad Abdelwahhab Bakri, 24, and his brother Ahmad, 22, were sentenced to 40 months in prison, Yemeni Khaled al-Batati, 23, received a 38-month sentence and Yemeni Omran al-Faqih, 31, was sentenced to two years. Nov. 17 2005 Iraqi Attorney General Chathanfar Hmod Al-Jasim presented Interpol with an extradition request to bring Saddam Hussein’s nephew from Yemen back to Baghdad to standtrial for “committing acts of terror,” the US military said in a statement on Thursday. Omar Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan Al-Tikriti, the son of Saddam Hussein’s half brother, has been sought by Iraqi officials for his leading role and financial support to “terrorist organizations”,the military said in a statement. Feb 5, 2006; (23 escape) The Mutamarnet website mentioned that the fugitives, particularly Jamal al-Badawqi, the second one accused in the case of Cole, were 9 of those tried in the case of blasting the French oil tanker Limburg offshore Mukalla in 2002. They are: Mohammed Ali Saad, Arif Saleh Mujali, Omar Saeed Jarallah, Qassem Yahya al-Raimi, and Mohammed Ahmed al-Dailami. The list of runaways also includes four persons convicted on charge of their membership of al-Qaeda organization and formation of an armed gang, namely: Ibrahim Mohammed al-Maqri, Shafiq Ahmed Omar, Abdullah Yahya al-Wadie and Mansour Nasser al-Bayhani. Two others are from al-Tawheed battalions that were headed by Anwar al-Jelani. They are: Abdulrahman Ahmed Basurra, and Khalid Mohammed al-Batati. Feb 21, 2006 Yemeni authorities have released 11 Muslim fundamentalists, including the suspected leader of an al-Qaida cell, who were detained in east Yemen. Daily al-Shura, mouthpiece of the opposition Popular Forces Union Party, Tuesday quoted well-informed sources as saying Abdel Rauf Nassib, who is accused of leading an al-Qaida cell whose members were convicted of planning terrorist activities and forging official documents, was among the released prisoners. March 6, 2006 A Yemeni state security court yesterday sentenced two young men to five years in prison after convicting them of attacking the former US ambassador to the country in 2004.Hizam Ali Hassan Al-Mass, 17, and Khaled Saleh Al-Halila, 18, were found guilty of trying to assassinate the US Ambassador to Yemen Edmund J. April 18 2006 A Yemeni court sentenced 13 Islamist militants to prison terms of up to seven years Wednesday for planning attacks against American and other Western targets. Group leader Ali Sufyan al-Amari was sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in founding the group with the intent of kidnapping foreigners and bombing Western interests in Yemen…Only one of the 14 defendants, Faisal Abdul-Aziz, was acquitted because he had turned himself in and cooperated with investigators. April 20, 2006 April 17, the SSSPC wrapped up the trial of Mohammad Hamdi Al-Ahdal, the suspected second-in-command of Al-Qaeda’s terrorist network in Yemen, and set April 26 for pronouncing the verdict. Al-Ahdal, 35, is charged with being part of an armed gang formed to attack foreign interests and damage Yemen’s security and stability. During the trial, public prosecutor Khalid Al-Mawri called for the maximum penalty for Al-Ahdal, who prosecutors say received up to $50,000 from Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to finance the network’s operations in Yemen and aid detained group members’ families. August 31, 2006 Sources in Sana’a said Sheikh Hadi Dalqam handed over the two brothers, Arif and Hizam Majaly, to security authorities at the end of last week. October 5, 2006 Authorities reveal the arrest of four AQ planning suicide attacks: Abdullah Mohammed Mohsin al-Rajawi, member of the group, hid the car in the Arahab district, some 20 km to the north of Sana’a, where a forged number plate was put on it before the plot was discovered by security agents. Investigations of those now in custody have also revealed a call for the continuation of such terrorist works, as mentioned in a will written by one of the cell members who was meant to commit suicide in a future attack. Nov 4, 2006 The Specialized Court of Appeal ruled that 19 prisoner, of whom five are Saudis, are innocent of forming an armed gang, convicting six of charges of forging official documents. Ali Naji, Jamal al-Maqrami, and Mohammed al-Qirshi were sentenced to three years in prisons each, with charges of forming an armed gang targeting the Americans in Yemen. Abdullah Naji, Abdullah Ahmed al-Shajarah, Ammar Abdullah Fadel, Muhsen Mabkhout, Mohammed Falah al-Qahtani, Mohammed Manqoush were convicted of forging official documents. They were sentenced to two to three years in prison. Nov 6, 2006 A Sana’a appeals court acquitted 19 alleged Al-Qaeda members Saturday on charges of conducting terrorist acts targeting Americans in Yemen. However, Judge Sa’eed Al-Qatta did convict six of the suspects of forging official documents, but stated that the court found no evidence that the 19 had formed an armed gang. Ali Hussein (also known as Abu Ali Al-Harethi), Ammar Fadhel, Abdullah Al-Shejarah, Mohammed Hadhban and Saudi nationals Mohammed Al-Qahtani and Muhsen Mubarak were convicted of forging official documents. Hussein and Fadhel were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, beginning from their arrest date, while the remaining four were sentenced to time served and subsequently released. Nov 8, 2006 — Syrian authorities have handed over a member of the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army, a terrorist organization, who was arrested while attempting to cross into Iraq via the Syrian border, media sources reported Wednesday. Wade’e Hamid Al-Dawlah and three other Aden-Abyan Islamic Army members traveled to Iraq in February 2006 to fight U.S. troops there. March 15, 2007 An appeals court upheld the prison sentence of 14 Yemenis, who were convicted of forming an armed gang to carry out terrorist acts in Yemen, including attacks on western interests. The State Security Court of Appeals, chaired by Judge Saeed al-Qat’a, ordered the imprisonment of defendant Ali Mohammed Sufyan al-Ammary for six years. Al-Zubair Abdul Rahman al-Mikhlafi, Mohammed and Khalid Abdul-Aziz Qateeni, Hassan Ali al-Hadda and Jamal Abdeh Nasser al-Qumadi each received four years, starting from the date of arrest. The court also upheld the primary sentence of three years each for: Hamid Mohammed Radman al-Wisabi, Badr al-Husseini, Mohammed Ali Hayder, Ibrahim Mabkhut al-Wasabi, and Ammar Ahmed Saleh al-Muradi. March 2, 2008 (Eight foreign weapons smugglers) Two men, Abdi Othman Soli, 28, a Danish citizen of Somali origin, and Abdullah Awadh Al-Masri, 37, a Yemeni national, were found not guilty this week of smuggling weapons to Somalia in 2006. However, the court gave Al-Masri a three-year prison sentence for other charges such as working with and providing shelter for Al-Qaeda operatives and illegal weapons trading. Feb 27, 2009 A Yemeni security court on Tuesday sentenced three members of an alleged Al-Qaeda cell to seven years each in jail on charges of plotting attacks and possessing explosives. The three were convicted of conspiring to attack tourists and government facilities to avenge the killing by security forces of Al-Qaeda field commander Hamza al-Kaithi in August last year. Mohammed al-Saadi, 24, Issam Gheilan, 24, Munir al-Bouni, 23, and Osama al-Saadi, 15, confessed to possessing a rocket launcher, an AK-47 assault rifle, a pistol and ammunition.
