Al Qaeda Shifted from Afghanistan to North Yemen in 2007

Filed under: Al-Qaeda, Saada War, TI: External, TI: Internal, Yemen — by Jane Novak at 3:14 pm on Thursday, June 18, 2009

Considering the Germans’ kidnapping in Sa’ada has put a new focus on terrorists in northern Yemen, I wanted to clarify the timeline. Al Qaeda made a push into northern Yemen in 2007, according to Saudi intel statements and other reports at the time. Of course they were there before, but in 2007 there was an increase, prompting the Saudis to call Yemen then potentially “the new Afghanistan”. It was an unusual statement for the Saudis if you look closely. You can figure who the Saudi official is. This is in addition to the repeated Saudi reports of training camps in northern Yemen that accompanied the announcements of mass round-ups in Saudi Arabia.

The recent (April?) arrival of foreign fighters in Sa’ada as well as the minor migration from Afghanistan to Yemen noted by the New York Times last week just augmented the numbers. Abdul Rahman al Rashed notes today: There are documented reports confirming that convoys from the Al-Qaeda Organization are moving in large numbers to the northern mountains of Yemen…

Furthermore the Houthis have noted foreign fighters in Sa’ada for years, including many Egyptians, if I recall correctly, among other nationalities. Al Qaeda is and has been well established in northern Yemen for quite some time and it has been an important location within the broader organization (Al Qaeda Central). When you overlay the Sa’ada Wars on the region, its quite interesting. Not to mention the Iraqi Ba’athists incorporated into the Yemeni military in Sa’ada since 2005, which was the year all journalists were excluded from the governorate. The ban on journalists in Sa’ada continues to today.

Alsharq Alwasat via AOLDecember 2007: An official who is a close observer of the Al Qaeda network believes that the organization has begun to shift its activities to Yemen, in addition to its strong presence in Iraq. The movement’s migration from Afghanistan is practically aiming to surround the Gulf region, which Al Qaeda considers its first and last goal….

The aforementioned official believes that Yemen may replace Afghanistan as the incubator to breed, rally and train [terrorists]. In practice, Yemen could become the new Al Qaeda base a label once reserved for Afghanistan…If Al Qaeda has really decided to shift its center and perhaps its headquarters to the mountain peaks of northern Yemen, then we are facing a new challenge and a new phase in combat.

What the Saudi and European officials said about the existance of the terrorist group in yemen is true, unfortunatly is late ,because they this groups already established their ideological ,logistic and military basese the end of Russian war in Afghanistan and became more strongly after the unity between the North and South yemen when the Sana,a regime started its plan to overthrow their partner in the unity ,the Jihadists and their theorists Salifis Clerks started religious and military schools in different areas in North Yemen Such as Sa,ada ,Hudidah,Abyan in the South as a part of their readiness to fight with President Saleh ,this issue was one of the political conflict issues between the Southern leadersand the President ,this people according to an agreement with President Saleh based on that they assassinated about 156 political and military cadres from the southern cadres immediatly after the unity till the war against the south 1990 i which those Jihadists and Salafis played very important military roll,as a reward Saleh allowed them to establish hundreds of schools and establish military bases in about 4 areas 3 of them in the North in Sa,ada headed by Salafis Clerk Muqbel Alwada,ad and he died now Mohammed Alamam whose base in Omaran receive hundreds of recruited foreigners and thousands of yemeni young people whom they receive ideological teachings and military training and now the new coalition agreement signed with the regime last month will difinatly increase their activities in the whole region and Yemen will be similar to Afghanistan .Now the international community ,united states and the arabian gulf countries including Egypt,Syria and the other arabic countries who are under AlQA,A,Da threatening need to change their political stance and the way they deal with President Saleh and try to study well ,analize and evaluate the situation inorder to take the right decision towards this situation and the conflict between the North and South by supporting the southern people who will diffinatly will restlessly fight the terrorism ,they need to help the northern opposition forces who want to make political and economic reforms in the north, they need to make more pressure on President Saleh to stop his coalition and cooperation the terrorist and extremist groups including Salfis ,otherwise Yemen will be the homeland of the terrorist organizations such as alqa, ada, jihadist and Salfis groups and this will not be far.

Ignoring the reality is one of arabic and islamic countries big mistakes, everyday our politicians, writers governments political organizations in the power and opposition forces ,they are talking about the arrival of foreigh fighters or terrorists as they are great armies belong to great countries and expecting that if they go any country they will dramatically change the political and military balances ,that is not true ,they are just small but qualified terrorist groups, but there another factor on which they depend in implementing their terrorist operation ,that real ,effective and dangerous factor is the salafis groups who are consisting of hundereds of thousands existing in every arabic and muslim countries and in many western countries and who are the main supporters in their different ideological, operational and logistical activities. Some people they they will ask how or why ,others will refuse or deny any relation between these terrorist groups and Salafis groups and that is not tru for me and for many people who are very familiar and sincere in reading the history and the relation between theses groups and the ideology on which they founded their relations. For me i see them as one under different names founded and appeared in different situations and different countries and under different political situations, but are the same and having the same ideology whereever and whenever they are, alqaida people formed their political organization in a specific moment and under a specific circumstances, but they were untill that moment Salafis and still,Taliban in both countries Pakistan and Afghanistan their ideology before they started their terrorist activities was Salafism and still the same,Algerian Jihadist and Egyptian Jihadist were also Salafis before starting their terrorist operations in Egypt and Algeria and still Salafis,Terrorists in Iraq in the Sunnis area based on the same Alqaeda ideology and are Salafis ,terrorists in yemen were and are Salafis as well as those in Saudi arabia and Jihadist in Somalia. What i want to say and confidently confirm it is that ( TERRORISM IS SALAFISM AND SALAFISM IS THE TERRORISM),anybody who attend their special lectures in their Schools or Mosques which normally held for their people or supporters or even some of their friday,s speech will see how this people try to create a kind of hate towards any people and anybody who are disagreed with them, their ideology based on Jihadism against all people in the west ,east and or other religions, but all people disagreed with their wrong understaing of Islam, therefore it is time for all officials ,politicians, governments to realize this reality and re-evalute their policies, especially the arabic and islamic countries ,otherwise soon will see Somalia and Yemen under the control of the groups and will easly see them in saudi arabia and other Gulf countries,of course nobody can predicate how the situations will be in these countries and may be in the world.

I do not believe that AlQAEDA needs to send their people to yemen,if they decide to do it that will be only as trainers to transfering their high quality of terrorist experience and knowledge ,otherwise they already have thousands of terrorists who are originally yemenis (NORTHERNERS),they also have a hundreds of thousands of Salafis who are ideologically well prepared to comply and fight against their enemies who are also Alqaeda enemies,so i do not believe they are moving all their fighters outside of Afghanistan and Pakistan while the American and their allies saying is difficult to win the war in Afghanistan by the military force only and that they are looking for a political solution, such announcement give more the terrorists more hopes and encourage them to continue the fight despite their human looses ,Yes the Pakistani military operations making the situation difficult for them ,bu i believe they will withdraw from the ground military battle for while inorder to gain the time to reorganize their shatered groups which will take a while, however they will continue focusing and preparing for a new front and Yemen is best for many reasons such as the social and tribal relations, the educational backwardness, the geography and the most important thing is hundreds thousands of supporters and is the closest and widest border to Saudi arabia through which can infiltrate to the other gulf countries and strike the western interests in the Red Sea Arabic gulf area and Arabic Sea.
