As the government is shutting news sites and monitoring web cafes, it is also contracting for wireless internet in 4000 mosques. They want to attract youths. But I wonder why they didn’t start with the schools first? The Star

THE Yemen Government has engaged the services of a local company in Kulim, Kedah, to set up web portals and wireless lin-kage at 4,000 mosques in its country.

NFAB Holdings Services (M) Sdn Bhd’s proposal has been submitted to the Grand Mufti Council of Yemen and it has, in principle, agreed to implement it.

NFAB managing director Dr Nurul Faisal Abu Bakar said the programme could benefit the mosques in the northern African country as it could attract youths to participate in religious activities organised by its respective mosques.

NFAB has a track record of setting up online access in 171 mosques in Kedah and Penang under its own endowment programme.

The fund for the project will be borne by the mufti council as agreed during the first discussion, said Dr Nurul Faisal in an interview.

He would meet officers at the mufti council of Yemen next month to discuss the overall cost and necessary infrastructure for the project.

Dr Nurul Faisal said the council had also agreed to provide a six-storey building in Aden for the company to set up, operate and maintain the web portals and online facilities before eventually handing it over to the council.

He said the building located near the Aden International Airport would be shared with a proposed Islamic university which would be set up separately but under a concept, similar to the Insaniah Islamic Universiti in Alor Setar which was managed by the Kedah Government, he said.

Dr Nurul Faisal said his company was also sourcing for funds, especially from Saudi Arabia, to install Internet services at 700 other mosques in Malaysia.
