News Yemen The U.S. Embassy in Sana’a has reaffirmed its support for freedom of press in Yemen.
On November 3, the U.S. Ambassador Stephen Seche met with al-Masdar Chief Editor Samir Jubran at the Embassy and discussed with him the recent ruling by the Special Court for Press and Publications against Jubran and the Yemeni-American journalist Munir al-Mawiri, a press release by the U.S. Embassy saidm on Monday.
Seche and Jubran also discussed “a growing list of cases of censorship of articles in independent publications, obstruction of al-Ayyam newspaper for the past seven months, imposition of a one-year ban on Al-Masdar editor-in-chief, Samir Jubran, and a lifetime ban on U.S. journalist Munir al-Mawri by the Special Court for Press and Publications, the arrest in Aden of journalists Salah al-Soqladi and Foud Rashed last summer, and the as-yet unresolved disappearance of well-known writer and commentator, Mohammed al-Maqalih.”
The Ambassador reiterated the support of the Government of the United States of America for press freedom in Yemen, and its view that responsible and independent media perform an essential function in a democratic society, according to the press release.
Local and international press organizations announced their rejection for sentences against al-Masdar and al-Mawiri as well as offensive against many other journalists in the country.
