Yemen Begins Constructing Military Base on Perim Island

In Feb, 2009, the French were earlier talking about an anti-piracy base on the island.

WT: The Yemeni Coast Guard said it was building a base in the Bab Al Mandab strait, a target of Somali pirates. On June 27, the coast guard said the base was located on the Miyoun island and would protect commercial shipping that links Asia and Europe.

“Construction has already begun,” a Yemeni source said.

Miyoun, also known as Perim, divides Bab Al Mandab, a 30-kilometer wide strati between Djibouti and Yemen. In 2008, a U.S. company launched plans to build a bridge that would connect the two countries.

Yemen has been assisted by Britain and the United States
to bolster its military and security forces. Both NATO states have also helped supply and train Yemen’s new Coast Guard.

Bab Al Mandab has been reported to serve as a passage for more than three million barrels of oil per day. Most of the shipments stem from the Gulf Cooperation Council states and are destined for Europe and the United States.

France has also been assisting the Yemeni military. On June 27, a French special forces delegation discussed counter-insurgency cooperation with the commander of Yemen’s special forces, Brig. Gen. Ahmed Saleh, the son of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

“Saleh expressed satisfaction for the growing friendly relations and cooperation between the armies of the two countries, especially in fields of training and joint operations that target counter-terrorism, smuggling and sea piracy,” the Yemeni news agency, Saba, reported.

I was military governor of perim island as a young royal marine in 1965 and indeed caught my first pirate/gun runner operating from there – the first of many, not much has changed!
It is an ideal operating base from which to dominate the straits with a very good harbour (used by the british fleet as a coaling base for many years) and has a serviceable if rough runway for stol aircraft.
my real concern is that yemen is by any standards a fragmented country ruled by a regine which is deeply corrupt, lead by an unpleasant individual with strong links to the worst of the somali clans. There is no doubt as previous articles have said that iran and al Q are operating in the country.
it is also the case that south yemen wish to regain their independence, like those in the north and are being subjected to harsh reprisals for so doing.
So by building an effective operating base on perim the french are ensuring that should yemen be taken over by even more anti western interests or a local leader imerge in that area whose interests/backing come from an anti western group will have the means to dominate the straits in a way not possible as yet. Indeed one could argue that should those interests be aligned with iran then that country will have the ability to control BOTH key strategic straits.
The only good thing i suppose is that it is not china who is building this base! they are aggressively increasing their influence in the region as is well known of course.
however the west should be very careful about this – in my view it is very worrying indeed.
