103K soldiers, security officials to secure elections

26 Sept: SCER: 103,000 officers and soldiers to secure the presidential election Saturday 18 February 2012

The Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) has used over103,000 officers and soldiers from military and security units to secure all electoral committees and constituencies.

This came in the statements of the SCER’s Member and Supervisor of the Security Committee, Judge Saba al-Hajji, during the press conference held at the Media Center for Elections.

He said that the security committee at the SCER directly keeps in touch with Ministers of Interior and Defense to follow up the implementation of the security plan and to coordinate to address any obstacles as well as to take measures to reduce the phenomenon of carrying arms on the polling day.

In this regard, Judge al-Hajji stressed the need to join hands to activate the Law regulating the possession of arms and the resolution on weapons curfew as well as raising awareness on that amid citizens.

For his part, Head of the Technical Affairs and Planning at the SCER, Judge Yahya al-Iryani, pointed out that the SCER has completed the transfer of all belongings of the electoral process, such as cabins, boxes, supplies stationary and others, to the provinces and that these materials are on their way to the polling centers from today.

He noted that the boxes committees, which amount to 28,742 committees and 732 additional committees, have begun to go to their headquarters today, indicating that electoral committees were identified for the internally displaced people in the provinces of Aden, Abyan, Sada, Amran, Lahj and Hajjah.

Moreover, Judge al-Hajji explained that the SCER has tried to involve the expatriates in the presidential election, but it could not due to circumstances beyond its control.

For her part, the SCER’s Member and Head of Parties and Civil Society Organization Sector, Judge Samiah Mehdi, talked about the sector’s role in facilitating the task of the local and international civil society organizations in monitoring the elections, as it is the most important standard of transparency and integrity.

For his part, Head of the Media Sector at the SCER, Judge Sahel Hamza talked about the facilities provided by the Commission for all media representatives and journalists from local media and correspondents of the Arab and foreign media to enable them to cover the electoral process in an ideal manner.saba
