Three dead in South Yemen

Filed under: Elections, South Yemen — by Jane Novak at 11:07 am on Monday, February 20, 2012

Voting day updates:

Its over! Hadi wins in a landslide. Many people happy to be rid of Saleh. Inauguration Saturday Feb 25.

The first test of the new Yemeni government is how honestly they deal with today’s election; while much was good, even stellar, hiding, minimizing or outright lying about the hot spots isn’t going to encourage confidence.

This is very encouraging because it reflects reality instead of the normal knee jerk propaganda:

Egypt Ind Separatists who had vowed to mark Tuesday’s presidential vote as a day of “civil disobedience” have seized half of the polling booths in Yemen’s main southern city Aden, a government official said.

“Half of the polling booths in Aden have been shut down after they were seized by gunmen from the Southern Movement,” a local government official told AFP. He said the gunmen had closed 10 out of the city’s 20 voting stations.

Beeb Four soldiers killed in Hadramout, half voting centers closed in Aden. Nothing on the wounded people. Everything peachy in Sanaa.

Why we reject the elections by Noon

A few Houthis in Taiz but otherwise voting smooth, needed and got more ballots.

No confirmation or news updates on the foreign workers, must have been a rumor, the best possible outcome. OR something happened and everyone is fine.

Also report: “News confirm the filling of election boxes (by votes of those who didn’t vote) just before closing time at six o’clock in the evening in most of the election centers in the Governorates of Omran and Hajah..”

Voting in the South is not smooth, tension and clashes in Aden, Hadramout and Shabwa. One report injuries, shooting ongoing in Aden. Violence reported in Amran, Aden Taiz, Lahij, Mukalla and Shihr. Half polling stations closed in the south by one report. After five years, there is still no official southern spokesman to explain why there is a boycott, or what happened where, to the world in Arabic or English. There are people getting shot because of the boycott and there’s no statement.

The Houthis on the other hand are very good with statements:

In an attempt to pre-empt failure inevitable for the proportion of citizens’ participation in (the province of Saada and Harf Sufian and the provinces of argument and the cavity) has the authority to distribute the ballot boxes in areas outside their constituencies so that the distribution of funds in (Imran and incited, Sana’a and argument) on behalf of the circles (Saada).

We emphasize that polling stations are open and there is no interference from us towards those who want to vote and to exercise electoral commissions operate without any hindrance Remember, all that is said in some of the media tendentious is an attempt to justify the failure and cover the popular rejection of the real adjustments unilateral imposed on people by force and ignored the suffering and demands .

And began to crowd in (Saada) out of hours marched Tazahria mass to reflect the absolute rejection of this farce is the predetermined and practice of form, and confirmed its progress continued in the popular revolution, without regard to any attempts at misleading the people deterred from continuing the path of revolutionary even up to achieve the goals of the revolution and you will detail later.

The difference in perspective between people in Sanaa and Taiz where everyone is happy and the south and Saada is striking. Hopefully the election overcomes the schism enough to enable conversation instead of making it worse.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Hopefully calm will take hold but expect updates. There is the perception in the south that the election is a referendum on unity and participation somehow legitimizes the state. Too bad public diplomacy was so poor or non-existent in the south in the lead up to the election. Below is a report from Radfan (ar) that details exactly which centers have their boxes and which were burned or blocked. And this link seems to be a running update from the south. More at Aden Al Ghad and the Aden News Agency.

While I am wholly against mobs blocking the voter boxes or attacking the voter centers, people also certainly have a right to boycott and chant, just as they have a right to vote. The security forces reportedly are shooting to kill. And considering their demonstrated propensity toward violence, why do the security forces have live ammo and not rubber bullets? The fatalities are in three separate provinces: Mukalla, Dala’a and Khormaksar, Aden.

(Update: Hopefully this is an entirely wrong, 7:00 pm EST Several reports from Aden of the Yemeni army shooting on a car of Americans foreigners (election workers) after midnight in the al Boriqua section, nothing substantiated but Mareb Press has it now but is calling them foreigners. Also flames seen at the electoral center in eastern Dees, Hadramout and an explosion at the May 22 School (CT flash bangs?) in Mansura, Aden. There are several reports of loud explosions and exploding “stun grenades” at polling centers like the one at al Mansura, mixed in with the other news. Audio of gunfire in Mansoura Aden, here )

And the chant is: “Unity has been butchered under tracks of your ousted murderer, under the fire of Ali Mohsen’s artillery, under the beards of the Islah Mujahidins, under the sponsorship and supervision of your Saleh’s shadow-vice, your prospective President whom the Southerners disown and abhor.”

Disowning and abhorring is one thing. Its another to deny other people their civil rights. They say northerners were trucked in to vote (as happened in 2006) but after five years of southern demonstrations, there should be a more politically mature way to make the point to the international community that the south rejects unity than by attacking the polling centers. But someone has to intervene on the trigger happy security forces before things get worse. Oh wait, Feierstein said anyone who attempts to disrupt the “election” will be dealt with as a terrorist, so I guess they got a green light. Do the security forces have immunity for the fresh violence or any incentive whatsoever to restrain themselves? No mention was ever made by the UN, EU, US over the last year of the vast bloodshed during the years of southern protests.

For an idea of what its like, the following vid is the Al Saeed Educational Compound in Shabwah, Attaq, a location supposed to be an election center. It might have been good for anyone to reach out to the southerners before last week, when the first EU delegation went to Aden and said southerners are fragmented and have different opinions in other governorates. Actually the further you get from Aden, the more hardened the positions, because most of the prior violence was in Lahj, Dhalie etc.

One person was killed today Monday during clashes between central security forces and protesters calling for the boycott of the elections – in front of the polling station in the area of Tres district in the province of Hadramaut (south east of Yemen).

Aden News Agency said that the central security forces fired live bullets at demonstrators in the area of Tres District, Hadramout province, which led to the death of Saleh Mabkhout Sayari.

Live fire by security forces in al Mansoura as well as tank fire per residents. Five badly injured by gunshots to head and body.

Three soldiers wounded Lahj yesterday in a gunfight:

NYR | AFP | Three soldiers were wounded in a clash with southern separatists near a polling booth in Lahij province on Sunday, two days ahead of Yemen’s presidential election, a government official said. “Gunmen from the Southern Movement attacked military vehicles carrying ballot boxes to a polling booth in a school near Al-Anad air base in Lahij,” the official told AFP. “Three soldiers were wounded in an exchange of fire.”

Round up at Reuters and EU statement here. The following is the report from Radfan:

Let’s tell the entire world what is going on now in South Yemen. Though Southerners are peacefully refuting the elections, military forces are going around to terrify and force people to participate. RIGHT NOW while I am writing, live bullets are heard in AlMansoora and Maalla where security forces are on streets accompanied by snipers on roof tops of peaceful residents.
The Northern government decided to shift chaos and conflict to the South — their new AND old battlefield. Who knows what’s their next plot against the South is? They have been recently working hard to distort the peaceful nature of Southern struggle by cunningly creating violent troubles here and there and having their own media companies and well-paid journalists accuse the Southern Movement of fostering “terrorism”!!!!!! We are facing now thousands of copies of Saleh who are even more dangerous than the original copy!

from what it sounds like, after reading many reports, some of the explosions at the polling centers are caused by flash/bangs ie, stun grenades that are used for counter-terror and are with the security forces.

how sure are you about the roof top snipers? not that its even slightly unlikely.

Yes, there were snipers in many areas in Aden, including Crater, Almansoora, Almaalla, and Sheikh Othamn (I double checked). They were seen on buildings and houses. This old man, for example, was killed by one of them; he was shot right at the back of his head. His name was Saleh Mattash.
