Yemeni government releases 428 Houthis and gets back 10 military vehicles

Spokesperson of Houthis, Mohammad Abdulsalam, told News Yemen that they have received 428 Houthis who have been released from prisons in Sana’a and Sa’ada.

This comes after rounds of Qatari mediation between the government and Houthis.

Abdulsalam said that Houthis in return handed over to the Qatari Mediation Committee 10 military vehicles in Harf Sufyan district in Amran province.

A rally of hundreds of Houthis has welcomed the released detainees.

AbdulSalam said that some of the released prisoners have been in prison for nearly 8 years. He said the released included those received judicial sentences and called “Sana’a Cell”.

This step comes within the framework of the implementation of a recent Doha agreement that stipulates that the government release detained Houthis and Houthis hand over military vehicle they have taken over during the conflict.

The conflict in Sa’ada broke out in 2004 and came to end in February 2010.

Almost 300 000 people were displaced, but only 20,000 returned to the city of Sa’ada, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

SANA’A, Jan. 2 — Nearly five hundred Sa’ada war prisoners were released on Thursday in exchange for weapons, Mohammad Albasha, the spokesman of the Yemeni embassy at Washington told the Yemen Times.

Albasha explained that the Qatar mediated and brokered the peace deal as part of proceedings initiated in August 2010.

Almost 270 prisoners were released from prisons in Sana’a and around 200 were released from political security prisons in Sa’ada, according to Mohammad Al-Mansoor, spokesman of the Shiite Al-Haq Party said to be in contact with the Houthis.

Al-Mansoor told the Yemen Times that the detainees were released after the Houthis returned 31 weapons to the Yemeni army. The weapons were taken by the Houthis in Sa’ada and Harf Sufian during the sixth round of the war between August 2009 and March 2010.

Concerns of those released

Some of the detainees claim that their property was seized when they were arrested and never returned back to them.

For Khaled Abdulwahed Shareef, who was arrested in June 2008 and released at the end of the same year, getting his cars from the port has become almost impossible.

Shareef, 26, imports cars. He buys them second hand from the USA and sells them in Yemen. He said that when he was detained by political security in Sana’a, he received four cars from the US that were seized by the political security.

“It has been around two years since I was released and I have still not got my things back that were with me at the time of my arrest,” said Shareef. “I have spent around USD 1,500 in procedures with the government to try to get my possessions back but have received nothing.”

Shareef said that besides from the four cars, two digital cameras and a university certificate were also taken from him when he was arrested. His certificate was for an Information Technology degree from the USA.

On Saturday, the Yemeni Organization for Defending Human Rights released a press release asking the government to compensate the released prisoners.

According to the head of the organization, Ali Al-Dailami, around 30 of those who have been released have registered their names at the organization in order to help them retrieve their possessions.

“The 30 cases we have are only a few of the actual number of cases as people are also going to other human rights organizations that are appealing for the return of their possessions,” Al-Dailami told the Yemen Times.

“Now, the organization is working on getting these possessions back to their owners,” he added.

He also explained that some prisoners became infected with diseases as a result of their time in the political security prison.

“The organization calls on the government to treat the prisoners who were infected with dangerous diseases – such as heart and gastric problems – as well as to return their properties back to them,” Al-Dailami said.

In a telephone call with the Yemen Times, Mohammad Al-Qaedi, the Press Officer at the Ministry of Interior, said he is not authorized to give any information regarding this issue.

Possible re-arrests

Despite the release of the prisoners, their families are still concerned about whether they will be arrested again.

Fatima Al-Ezzi breathed a sigh of relief when she heard on Thursday that her husband, Al-Ezzi Rajeh, was among those prisoners released from the political security prison in Sa’ada. Despite her happiness at her husband’s release, she said that she was still afraid that he may be arrested again if the government accuses him on another charge.

Al-Ezzi was arrested in 2005 and released in 2007 and then later that same year he was arrested again before being shortly released. On both occasions he was accused of having relations with the Houthis simply due to his position as both an Imam and a Zaidi.

The prisoners are still concerned that the government is not going to compensate them for the loss of their property as well as for the health risks they suffered while in prison.

There are still nearly 500 people in prison accused of conspiring with the Houthis, according to Al-Haq party.

According to estimations by the Yemeni Organization for Defending the Human Rights, approximately 8,000 people have been arrested on the charge of being either Houthis or of conspiring with Houthis since the beginning of the war in 2004.

وكان “تنظيم قاعدة الجهاد في جزيرة العرب” كشف في منشور وزعه الخميس بمدينة زنجبار بمحافظة ابين عن لائحة بأسماء 54 من أفراد الأمن يتبعون ما وصفه بـ “نظام الأسود العنسي “اعتبرهم “هدفا مشروعا” للقتل. The “Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula” revealed in a publication distributed by the city of Zanzibar Thursday Abyan province for a list of 54 security personnel belonging to what he described as “Black Ansi system,” calling them a “legitimate target” for the killing.

وأرفق المنشور الذي وزع في مدينة زنجبار – وتحصلت «وكالة أنباء عدن» على نسخة منه – بقائمة اسمية لأفراد الأمن المستهدفين الذين ينتسبون لأجهزة الأمن السياسي والبحث الجنائي وجهاز الاستخبارات العكسرية ، والذي قال تنظيم القاعدة انهم باتوا “هدفا مشروعا لنا ابتداء من 1 شوال 1431 هجري” أي اليوم الجمعة الموافق أول ايام عيد الفطر. واعتبر المنشور أفراد الأمن ” وخصوصا منهم الجواسيس” كما وصفهم ” أنهم اليد الضاربة والركن الركين لنظام الأسود العنسي ” والذي قال أنه ” بوجودهم يزاداد بغيا وتجبرا وتهكما على المسلمين ومحاربة الله ورسوله والمجاهدين الموحدين”. He said the publication of security personnel “and, especially, spies,” as described “they hand strike and the cornerstone of the system Ansi Black,” which said that “their presence Izhadad prostitute and Tjibra and cynical of the Muslims and the fight against Allah and His Messenger and the Mujahideen uniform.”

We urgently write to you to condemn the death sentence issued from one of Sana’a courts in the Republic of Yemen on Sunday 11 July 2010 against the political activist Ahmed Omer Alobady who has been in prison since 14th February 2008.

Mr Alobady was wrongly arrested by the occupation Yemeni forces for his politics views towards the Southern Arabia crisis, NOT for any crime that he has committed, in order to intimidate other political activists joining this peaceful movement.

Despite the Yemeni General Attorney’s failure to find any proof against Mr Alobady, he was sentenced to death.

This method is widely used by the Yemeni Government against all Southern Arabia political activists.

As a matter of urgency we would like you and ALL other organisations around the world to act quickly to overturn this unfair judgment.

نتوجه بهذا النداء العاجل اليكم لادانة الحكم الصادر من احدى المحاكم اليمنيه في صنعاء صباح يوم الاحد 11-7-2010م بحق الناشط السياسي احمد عمر العبادي السجين منذ14 فبراير 2008م الذي كان متواجداً اثناء حادثة الاعتداء على منزل رئيس تحرير صحيفة الأيام الجنوبي هشام باشراحيل في صنعاءوالذي كان حادثاً مدبراً يستهدف نشاطهما السياسي بدرجه أولى ومواقف الرجلين ودورهما المتميز في الحراك الجنوبي لاسكاتهما ومعاقبتهما على مواقفهما الثابته من القضيه العادله للشعب الجنوبي , وتم تدبير هذه ا لمكيده ا لجنائيه حتى يتسنى لحكومة الاحتلال اليمني إلباس القضيه ثوباً جنائياً كما تعود نظام صنعاء اليمني في التعامل مع خصومه السياسيين في العاده وعلى الرغم من ان النيابه العامه اليمنيه لم تتمكن من اثبات التهمه الجنائيه بالقتل لاحمد عمر العبادي . ولم تكتف سلطات صنعاء اليمنيه بالاعتداء على منزل باشراحيل في صنعاء بل قامت قوات الأمن اليمنيه بالاعتداء مرة أخرى على منزل باشراحيل في عدن مما أدى الى قتل حارس منزله وشخصين آخرين . أن كل هذه دلائل بأن هناك استهداف شخصي للرجلين احمد عمر العبادي وهشام باشراحيل .

اننا نطالب منظماتكم وكافة المنظمات الدوليه والانسانيه المهتمه بحقوق الانسان للقيام بحمله دوليه وسرعة التحرك وإدانة هذا الحكم الجائر وايقافه .

al Eshteraki: منعت سلطات مطار صنعاء الدولي زوجة معتقل في الأمن السياسي من السفر إلى بيروت يوم الأحد. Authorities banned Sana’a International Airport wife was detained in the political security of travel to Beirut on Sunday.

وقالت علياء الوزير زوجة المعتقل وليد شرف الدين للاشتراكي نت إن ضابط الأمن في المطار اعترض على بيان في جواز سفرها وادعى أن ذلك لايسمح لها بالسفر وحدها. Alia minister wife of the detainee Walid Sharaf al-Din of the socialist revealed that the security officer at the airport objected to the statement in her passport and claimed that it does not allow her to travel alone.

وأوضحت الوزير أن ضابط الأمن قال لها إنها “ربة بيت” ويحظر عليها السفر وحيدة دون محرم. The minister explained that the security officer told her she “housewife” and are prohibited from traveling alone without a mahram.

وحين اعترضت الوزير على الضابط بعدم وجود قانون بشأن ذلك، رد عليها مستهزئاً بأن قانوناً صدر قبل عشرة دقائق بذلك. When the officer objected to the minister that there is no law about it, he responded sarcastically that a law passed by ten minutes to do so.

وقالت الوزير إنها الوحيدة التي منعت من السفر فيما سافر على نفس الرحلة ناشطات أخريات وحدهن. The minister said she would only be barred from travel in traveled on the same flight and other activists alone.

وكانت علياء الوزير متوجهة إلى بيروت لحضور ورشة عمل تنظمها مؤسسة بيت الحرية التي تصدر تقارير سنوية عن الحريات في بلدان المنطقة العربية. Alia was the minister heading to Beirut to attend a workshop organized by Freedom House issued annual reports on the freedoms in the countries of the Arab region.

واعتقل جهاز الأمن القومي وليد شرف الدين زوج علياء في 25 أغسطس 2009 بتهمة التخابر لصالح إيران وقد أحاله للمحاكمة في المحكمة الجزائية المتخصصة. The National Security Service arrested Walid Sharaf al-Din Alia husband in August 25, 2009 on charges of spying for Iran has been referred to trial in the Specialized Penal Court.

al Sahwa – The supreme council of the Joint Meeting Parties condemned what it called “fierce media attacks” and threats against its spokesman Naif al-Qanis.

JMP demanded that authorities to bring repeated media intimidations against its spokesman and Al-Haq party to an end, bringing the authorities responsible for al-Qanis’s safety.

JMP’s supreme council discussed arrests carried out against political activists including Moamad al-Obdil who was arrested Sunday in Aden and Abdul-Rahman al-Sharafi who was arrests on Tuesday on Sana’a, expressing its solidarity with the activists.
